Ritchies blasts record 30 Mt in 2006

In 2006, a record 30 Mt was blasted by UK based geotechnical company Ritchies in quarries and civil¬-engineering projects across the length of the country and overseas.

Ritchies has been carrying out drilling and blasting operations since 1966, and is now the largest drill and-¬blast contractor in the UK. Ritchies has blasted in excess of 500 Mt since it has been in business.

Choice of explosive and initiation system has always been an area of keen interest, to ensure optimum breakage is achieved safely and at best value. Currently, the organisation is taking the lead with the use of electronic detonators.

Work is not confined to quarry operations, but includes civil engineering projects, as well as underwater blasting using purpose built drilling rigs.

Overseas work has been diverse with operations in the heat of India contrasting with the Arctic cold of the Baltic in Russia.

The company recently completed work in Cameroon, is currently working in Ghana, and anticipates commencing a further quarry operation in Sri Lanka this year.
