Staff qualified in roped access techniques
The main challenge for ground engineers Ritchies on the Saltford project is to install the anchors as safely and efficiently as possible. The anchors are installed by means of Terrapin drilling rigs, which are supported by temporary anchors installed in the narrow strip between the crest of the cutting and the Network Rail boundary fence. In turn, these anchors were installed by a micro JCB excavator with a drilling mast, which worked along the crest supported on boarding to maintain its stability.
After the anchors have been installed, anti-erosion matting and the Tecco mesh were fixed to the cutting face. This skilled work requires staff qualified in roped access techniques to drape the matting and netting down from the crest. The restricted main access for plant and materials is gained through a BT telephone exchange off the A4 Bath Road. The contract is worth approximately £2 million.
