Waste & Renewables Capability

In the waste and renewables sector, our comprehensive portfolio of services includes:

Energy from Waste (EFW) plant construction
Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) & Composting Plant
construction
Materials Recycling Facilities (MRF) construction
Gas Extraction facilities construction
Combined Heat & Power (CHP) plant construction
Transfer station construction
Landfill engineering

We are working with UK and World Global technology specialists to ensure that cutting edge solutions meet current and future client needs.

We take responsibility for managing design partners within the supply chain to guarantee buildability and, during construction, we undertake process integration plus management and installation of mechanical and electrical elements, commissioning and operation.

Energy from Waste facilities
Nuttall is the civils construction partner to Itochu and Takuma for all the foundations, building works and ancillary M&E services on the Lakeside Energy from Waste facility at Colnbrook near Slough.

The new facility will recover energy from 400,000 tonnes of waste a year, producing approximately 33MW of electricity from 2008 onwards.

The scope will also include elements of the mechanical and electrical operations. The civil engineering programme will take about two and a half years to complete.

Clinical Waste facilities
Developed to replace an existing clinical waste facility, this new state-of-the-art plant at Colnbrook will process 1.25 tonnes of medical waste per hour. Nuttall constructed the plant, integrating specialist process equipment with building and environmental services whilst working within
a confined site and tight time programme.

Composting Plants
As framework contractor for the Waste Recycling Group in South Yorkshire, we constructed the infrastructure and buildings required for a new state-of-the-art ABP (animal by-products) composting unit. This pilot plant, commissioned by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, included preparation buildings, as well as a maturation building. It was constructed within an existing operational facility and completed in only 10 weeks, thereby minimising disruption. Click for more information

TJ Composting Group Ltd, a rapidly growing SME with 6 sites in South East England, approached Edmund Nuttall to design and construct their new 20,000 tonnes per annum green composting plant at Swanley, Kent.

Redevelopment and upgrades of existing infrastructure
The implementation of 1999 Landfill Directive is leading to many changes in the infrastructure required by the waste industry. Many of these projects are small-scale redevelopment's, or improvements to existing facilities.

We recently successfully completed such a project near Droitwich, constructing a gas and leachate compound. Completed in 3 weeks and within budget, the project included ground works, drainage, fencing and Section 278 Works (access roads).

Sustainable construction was observed by recycling our compound hard standing to the access road. Click for more information
