Nuttall Traineeships - your future

Construction Technicians

Our Construction Technicians study for two years on an Advanced Apprenticeship programme consisting of a BTEC National Certificate in Civil Engineering and an NVQ level 3 in Site Technical Support, Key Skills and Employer Rights and Responsibilities. This programme is designed to allow our Construction Technicians to learn, work and get qualified at the same time and is great for those looking to start a career in Civil Engineering who want an alternative to A-levels.

The programme is conducted on a block release basis, which means that your time will be split between studying at the National Construction College in Norfolk and gaining site experience on one of our civil engineering contracts.

This apprenticeship is suitable for those aged 16-24 and applicants must have a minimum of 4 GCSE grades at A-C including Maths, English and Science.

Following successful completion of this programme, most Construction Technicians become Trainee Engineers and move onto the HND programme.

Trainee Engineers (Higher National Diploma Route)

Trainee Engineers follow a programme for two years, which enables them to gain an HND in Civil Engineering. This programme is conducted on a block release basis consisting of approximately 15 weeks attendance per year at the College of West Anglia and the remainder of the time being spent on one of our civil engineering contracts.

This programme is suitable for those aged 18 and over and demands A-levels in Maths and Science subjects or a BTEC National Certificate/Diploma, GNVQ or AVCE in Construction/Civil Engineering. For mature candidates, other relevant experience will be considered.

Following successful completion of the HND, Trainee Engineers usually transfer to monthly staff with conditions and opportunities similar to graduates. This enables them to follow an approved training programme to achieve Technician status of the ICE and then progress to Incorporated Engineer.

Trainee Engineers (Foundation Degree Route)

The Foundation Degree route is an alternative to the HND route. This is a two year programme conducted on a block release basis and requires attendance at Kingston University for three semesters with the remainder of the time spent on one of our civil engineering contracts.

The entry requirements for this programme are the same as for the HND route.

Following successful completion of the Foundation Degree, Trainee Engineers usually transfer to monthly staff with conditions and opportunities similar to graduates. A further year’s sponsorship for those who have gained a Foundation Degree and wish to gain a BEng is decided on an individual basis.

David Barton - Construction Technician

“I have always had an interest in how buildings and structures are constructed and after leaving Secondary School with 10 A to C GCSEs, I applied to Nuttall to sponsor me through the National Construction College at Bircham Newton in order to complete a Civil Engineering Apprenticeship.

This course is a good balance of practical and theory work. Most of the practical work takes place at the National Construction College which has every up-to-date piece of mechanical equipment available for our use. It’s like a ‘boys toys’ dream!! All the instructors are helpful, knowledgeable and good to get on with. The theory work takes place at the College of West Anglia, where we work alongside other trainees in our classroom studies.

For six months my work placement was at the Taw Estuary project in North Devon – a £40 million bypass and bridge designed to relieve major traffic congestion on the main holiday routes through the small town of Barnstaple. As soon as I arrived I was made welcome by the large team working on the project, and very soon found myself immersed in the real work of civil engineers, including measuring and setting out a new roundabout, and being put in charge of the inclinometer readings for all the major earthworks.”
